The Phillips Middle School band has been invited to participate in the fifth annual Kalahari Band Festival in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. April 20.

The Band Festival was created in 2008 with the goal of offering middle school bands a quality festival band experience in a supportive environment. Each participating band performs a number of selections for a panel of master adjudicators. Following the performance, each band receives not only written and audio comments, but also a 30 minute clinic by one of the adjudicators. The emphasis of the clinic is to use this "teachable moment" to demonstrate concepts and to enhance and validate great accomplishments.

“Our students have been working hard to prepare for this festival,” said Phillips Middle School Band Instructor Sarah Holder. “We are working on really difficult repertoire and the kids are ready to do a great job representing Iowa and Phillips Middle School.”

As Phillips prepares for their first appearance at the festival, they will also be the only participating Iowa school. The festival has grown from eight participating bands in 2008 to thirty-seven bands in 2012. Each band also has the opportunity to listen to at least two other bands during the day. The participating bands also enjoy some of Kalahari's fabulous amenities including a pizza party and of course, the waterpark and new indoor theme park.

This year's master adjudicators include: Gerald Gleason, retired LaCrosse School District Band Director, Dr. Peter Haberman, Director of Bands, University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire Dr. Paul Budde, Professor of Music, Gustavus, St. Cloud and St. Thomas Universities Tim Gleason, Director of Bands, Winona, Minnesota.

Phillips will perform at 11 a.m. Friday, April 20. All performances are free and open to the public. The performance will be broadcast live via Ustream and can be viewed at:
